From Chiang Mai to Chiang Dao

In early December, I joined a group of nine friends for an adventure from Chiang Mai to the peaceful town of Chiang Dao, known locally as the “City of Stars.” Our three-night trip was filled with hot springs, mountain hikes, mysterious caves, and a vibrant jungle music festival, providing a perfect escape into Northern Thailand’s beautiful landscapes and rich Lanna culture.

Our journey began early at Chiang Mai’s Chang Phuak Bus Station, where buses regularly depart for Chiang Dao, approximately 70 kilometers away. The scenic 1.5-hour ride offered views of rice paddies, fruit orchards, and glimpses of rural Thai life. Gradually, the impressive limestone peaks of Doi Luang Chiang Dao appeared on the horizon, signaling our arrival.

Arriving at Ashi Guesthouse Chiangdao

Upon reaching Chiang Dao, we settled into Ashi Guesthouse Chiangdao, a cozy place set amid lush gardens with stunning mountain views. December brought crisp, cool weather perfect for enjoying outdoor activities. Nights were especially clear, revealing spectacular star-filled skies and justifying Chiang Dao’s poetic nickname.

Chiang Dao maintains strong ties to its historical roots in the ancient Lanna Kingdom. Traditional wooden houses, elegant temples, and friendly local greetings such as “Sawasdee Jao” added authenticity to our cultural experience. Our meals frequently featured delicious Northern dishes like khao soi and sai ua, highlighting the region’s culinary heritage.

Relaxing at Chiang Dao Hot Springs

Our first day included a relaxing visit to Pong Arng Hot Springs within Pha Daeng National Park. Surrounded by lush jungle, the hot springs provided a rejuvenating soak, with water temperatures around 50°C. Afterwards, we explored the picturesque Sri Sangwan Waterfall, enjoying a refreshing dip in its cool waters.

Chiang Dao’s natural environment is impressive. In 2021, Doi Chiang Dao was designated a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, home to diverse wildlife including rare birds like the giant nuthatch and vibrant butterflies visible along hiking trails.

Hiking and Spiritual Reflections

The next morning, we rose early to hike to the Den Ya Kat viewpoint for a breathtaking sunrise above a sea of mist. Later, we visited Wat Tham Pha Plong, a serene forest temple reached via a staircase of 500 steps. Along the way, thoughtful Buddhist teachings prompted quiet reflection. The temple itself, nestled into a mountainside cave, offered spectacular views and deep tranquility.

Chiang Dao Cave Adventure

Chiang Dao Cave, situated at the mountain’s base, offered another remarkable experience. Guided by a local lantern-bearing guide, we navigated chambers filled with stalactites, stalagmites, and Buddhist shrines. Our guide shared fascinating local legends, enhancing the mystical atmosphere. The cave’s deep silence and darkness made for a profound exploration, connecting us with centuries of spiritual history.

Double Dick Tiger Music Festival

Coinciding with our visit was the unique Double Dick Tiger music festival in nearby Pa Tum Ngam Village. This intimate festival combined music, art, and cultural exchange, hosted collaboratively by locals and the Karen hill tribe. Set in rice fields beneath starlit skies, the festival featured diverse music performances, community art projects, and traditional foods. The evening culminated with the ritual burning of a bamboo effigy, a symbolic and unifying event that exemplified the festival’s communal spirit.

Reflecting on Chiang Dao

As we departed Chiang Dao, I reflected on the richness of our short stay. The town perfectly combined natural beauty, cultural depth, and genuine hospitality. Chiang Dao offered an authentic taste of Northern Thailand away from crowded tourist paths. From restorative hot springs and serene temples to vibrant festivals, it was a journey filled with memorable experiences.

Chiang Dao truly earned its nickname, the City of Stars ✨
